How to Find Balance During Quarantine

Video Series: Coping with the effects of COVID-19

One of the consequences of this pandemic, is that many people feel pressure to use this time at home as productively as possible. We may feel we should learn new skills, read many books, work out and get back into shape – and we may feel the need to place an incredible effort into all of these doings.

Although quarantine measures are being reduced in many countries, Yana Kreminska and her mental health colleagues are discussing whether it’s possible to “waste” quarantine, and what to do with this pressure for productivity.

Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist Dr. Dennis Ougrin who works at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation London, England, states there are many perfectionists among us and suggests keeping a healthy balance between doing what is useful and what is pleasurable. “Live life, day by day.”

Psychologist Marta Hladii, reminds us about the uncertainty regarding the timeline of this pandemic, it may very well last for much longer. Psychologist Halyna Netliukh, Executive Director of the Mental Health Institute at the Ukrainian Catholic University suggests “life in quarantine – is not a life placed on a pause. Life continues, only in different circumstances.” Halyna Netliukh reminds viewers that this pandemic is a stressful situation, and so our emotions, levels of energy and productivity may vary. We must take this into account. A balance is needed between the many areas of your life: work, family, hobbies. She reminds us not punish ourselves for not completing something on time and to always be gentle, listen and care for yourself.

The panel shares some of the ways they have spent their time during quarantine. Dr. Ougrin learned to make potato pancakes for the first time, Marta Hladii exercises and Halyna Netliukh paints, allowing her to connect to her inner artist.

The advice shared by mental health experts Halyna Netliukh, Dr. Dennis Ougrin and Marta Hladii are important for us to hear during quarantine and after restrictions are lifted.
